Somatic Experiencing® is a body-oriented approach to healing trauma, early developmental attachment trauma, and other stress disorders. It integrates stress physiology, psychology, ethology, neuroscience, biology, and indigenous healing practices. SE™ offers a framework to assess where a person is “stuck” in the fight, flight, or freeze responses, and provides tools to resolve these physiological states. SE™ is based on the observation of wild prey animals that are rarely traumatized despite being routinely threatened. These animals utilize instinctual mechanisms to regulate and discharge the high levels of arousal associated with these responses. These mechanisms provide animals, including humans beings, with a built-in “immunity'' to trauma that enables them to return to normal after surviving life-threatening experiences. The SE™ approach allows a person, through awareness of body sensations, to utilize his or her own innate mechanisms to safely experience and discharge highly aroused survival energies.
Tyler Orr is a SE practitioner in training. For more information, visit the official Somatic Experiencing® website or complete the form below.
